NEST Cam PoE Setup

Having just received my new NEST Cam to replace my existing Dropcam Pro, I wanted to update my  USB over PoE setup to work with my existing PoE switch (Cisco SD208P). The previous setup used a 24v PoE to USB setup which required it's own power adapter and was not 802.3af compatible. This time around I found several 802.3af solutions:

  • ArmorActive USB over PoE Adapter, $99 (too much)
  • Vidabox VidaPower CAT5 to USB Power Adapter, $99 (too much)
  • Tyson Power POE-MSPLT-USB PoE to USB Converter, $32.95 (Sold!)

All three adapters are 802.3af and 802.3at compliant and provide 12-15W output via USB. That is enough to power most current smartphones, tablets, and USB cameras.

Below is a picture of the basic test setup I used before installing the camera in my entryway.

Front & back of Tycon Power POE-MSPLT-USB. Adapter has a handy green LED to let you know if the adapter is receiving PoE.

After confirming that this setup would work, I replaced my Dropcam Pro with the NEST Cam in the entryway.

  1. Hi Steven! Is this setup still working out for you? I'm looking to match your setup exactly.

  2. Does this setup using the USB/Ethernet wire for network access? Or is it for power only and still relying on WiFi for network access?

  3. The Ethernet to USB adapter only provides power, you will still need wifi access for the camera.

  4. Thanks for posting this. I pre-wired ethernet cables to a number of camera locations when I built my house for PoE use, only to discover that I want to use Nest Cams. I can't feasibly re-wire, and so this will solve my problem. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

    1. Thanks for the post! I initially had IP camera's also, but I found the NEST camera to be an all-around better experience than my old PoE cameras.

  5. Steve, tyvm for posting this....saved me a bit of cash. Instead of Nest cameras, I have 5 Yi Home Camera 2 that performs better and no monthly fees. Only issues is finding a proper corner mount for it because these didn't swivel and can't be installed outdoors.

  6. I am interested in using this setup on the outside of my house, but I'm curious how the PoE box will fit in the wall?

  7. Steve - Thanks for this. I suspected this was doable, but hadn't put in the time to figure it out fully. It's great to see your success as an example to go off of. Would you mind elaborating the switch part of the equation? What switch are you using or what type of switch would you recommend? Thanks! -K

    1. I'm currently using a Linksys LGS116P without any issues. I would imagine any PoE capable switch that supports the 802.3af or 802.3at standards would work just fine, good luck!
